Taking Heritage to you - A 2 1/2 hour programme conducted within the school premises, where we arrange for a talk, exhibits, and a performance. Suitable for Racial harmony Programmes for the whole school.


Chinese Civilisation

Talk
  • Overview of Chinese history from the dawn of its civilisation to the demise of the Manchu Dynasty
  • Contributions of the Chinese civilisation
  • Trace the origins of many Chinese practices and traditions
  • Migration of the Chinese to Malaya and Singapore

Exhibits
  • Groups will rotate between stations to learn about Chinese culture such as symbolism, 'Feng Shui' and the Chinese Scholars implements for calligraphy
Performance

Learn about:

  • Historical background of the Chinese Opera
  • Enjoy a performance
  • Volunteers will try out some of their newly acquired skills, mimicking the performers.

Malay Civilisation

Talk
  • Trace the components of the Malay World and its social and cultural history from ancient to recent times
  • Learn about archaeological findings from excavations in Singapore linked to accounts of ancient Singapura and the Malay Kings

  • Groups will rotate between stations to learn about Malay culture such as 'Wayang kulit', 'batik', ' jamu' and games in an interactive manner
Performance

Learn about:

  • Historical background of Silat, an ancient martial art
  • Significance of the Kris
  • Volunteers will tryout some of their newly learnt Silat steps

Indian Civilisation

Talk
  • Overview of the origins and development of Indian Civilisation and its contributions, especially to South East Asia
  • Trace the migration of Indians from British controlled India to Malay and Singapore

  • Groups will rotate between exhibits to have their hands 'hennaed' and learn about Indian traditions such as the wearing of bangles, nose rings and 'pottu', ancient Ayurved and the art of painting 'kolam
Performance

Learn about:

  • Students will watch a demonstration of Bharata Natyam and learn about its history
  • Volunteers will also try out some steps of the newly learnt art.
