Conservation and Heritage

Lecture

- Trace the history of urban development in Singapore since the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles
- Explore how urbanisation has transformed the landscape and familiar landmarks
- Set the context which will facilitate understanding of current efforts at conserving historically-significant sites and buildings

Field Trip - Visit to 5 sites in Singapore
- Helps students to conceptualise issues discussed in the lecture
- Debates about the issues will be facilitated at each site to enable students to make the link between theory and reality
- Allow students to analyse divergent positions and perspectives of the state and non-governmental organisations (NGO) on issues of conservation

Responses to Globalisation and the New Economy

Lecture

- Show the transition of Singapore from a traditional economy and society, and its transformation into a modern-industrial state
- Reflects on the globalisation process and its impact on modern Singapore
- Tourism industry’s branding strategy will be cited as one perspective of appreciating the process of globalisation

Field Trip - Visits to 4 sites in Singapore that clearly show the impact of globalisation
- Debates about the issues will be facilitated at each site to enable students to make the link between theory and reality
